Throwback Thursdays [International Hits]

This weeks theme isn't tied down to any certain time period. As long as the song was released before 2005 and the band is from somewhere outside of the US - it's fair game. If you have any ideas for next week's playlist theme, comment down below. I usually "tweet the deets" on my twitter every Wednesday.

Let's do this

*****

MP3 :: Ace Of Base - I Saw The Sign [Gothenburg, Sweden]
MP3 :: Refused - Liberation Frequency [Umeå, Sweden]
MP3 :: Muse - Time Is Running Out [Devon, England]
MP3 :: Bjork - It's Oh So Quiet [Reykjavík, Iceland]
MP3 :: U2 - One [Dublin, Ireland]
MP3 :: The Cranberries - Zombie [Limerick, Ireland]
MP3 :: Radiohead - Paranoid Android [Oxfordshire, England]
MP3 :: Eric Clapton - Layla Unplugged [Surrey, England]
MP3 :: Eiffel 65 - Blue [Turin, Italy]

That last one has been requested a lot in the past couple weeks. You're in luck this week Eiffel 65 lovers

PS: I apologize for the terrible photoshopped picture. I was tired and it was late...

VIDEO: YACHT - "Psychic City [Voodoo City]"

I usually wait until Saturday to post videos on my "Saturday In Videos" post, but I simply can't wait that long to post this one. Check out the occult - I mean - YACHT in this bizarre, twisted yet slightly humorous video for Psychic City [Voodoo City]. Their debut LP See Mystery Lights is out now on DFA

MP3: The Very Best - Warm Heart OF Africa [Architecture In Helsinki REMIX]

If you have The Very Best mixtape they released last year [and if you don't, either get it or just stop listening to music], you would know that they did an amazing remix of Architecture In Helsinki's "Heart It Races." This time the tables have turned and AIH are remixing The Very Best's new track Warm Heart Of Africa - instrumentally - and it's pretty effing rad. The trumpets are the solid back bone of the song even though they wobble and lean all over the place in a drowsy state of being - kind of like a night of drinking way too much tequila.

MP3 :: The Very Best - Warm Heart Of Africa [Architecture In Helsinki Remix]

Become a fan of music and grab The Very Mixtape on their myspace page for free. Keep an eye out for new songs off of their new record coming out in Sept.

MP3: Free Energy - Dark Trance

So I just realized that the Jay-Z post [down below] was the 300th post on this site. Which is pretty rad. Thanks to all of you for reading so far. There is much more to come in the near and distant future for Digital Dreams. If you're not already, please follow us on Twitter at @Digidreams for post update links and my random one liners. Moving on....

*******

I've posted about Free Energy probably about 3 times already with 2 other tracks. Check out their latest offering "Dark Trance" which is off of their upcoming debut LP Stuck On Nothin'. There is absolutely nothing "dark" or "trance" about Dark Trance - more like modern "rock" "anthem."

MP3 :: Free Energy - Dark Trance

MP3: Jay-Z - Run This Town [ft Kanye + Rihanna]

Jay teams up with Kanye and Rhianna. I know this track came out last week sometime. I hate posting things late, but this needs to be shared. Enjoy. Blueprint 3 is out Sept 11

MP3: Delorean - Deli

I usually don't listen to everything Pitchfork has to say about anything. But I have to admit, sometimes they do come around with top quality picks. Check out Delorean. Apparently [thanks to various other sites] they've been around for a little while with 3 other albums under their belts. The latest offering - Ayrton Senna EP - is a 4 song summer dance rager which clearly takes influence from disco to dance hall to wild summer nights.

I seriously hope they make it out to the states soon. I'm sure they can do some major remix damage...

MP3 :: Delorean - Deli

Be sure to buy Ayrton Senna EP over at Mushroom Pillow Records

REMIX: Miike Snow - Animal [Peter Bjorn & John Remix]

To be honest with you, I never got into Peter Bjorn and/or John. I once got some promo copy of one of their albums and it pretty much ruined it for me [sorrys]. On the other hand, Miike Snow's "Animal" has been top on the list of favorite songs of the year so far. So when I read that PB&J did a remix of it, I guess I had to check it out. Thankfully, I wasn't disappointed. PB&J hold together all the hooks in the song that make "Animal" the "beast" that it is. Which is what remix's are supposed to do - enhance.

Check out the song below. If you're not familiar with Miike Snow - then get familiar and head over to insound to buy their debut s/t album

Saturday In Videos: Fiery Furnaces // Arctic Monkeys // Smells Like Teen Astley // Reading Rainbow

The Fiery Furnaces - Charmaine Champagne from Thrill Jockey Records on Vimeo.

New vid for Fiery Furnaces' "Charmaine Champagne." Spazzy, jazzy, colorful, catchy, loose. Zatarains. Ba, ba, ba, da

*******

I never became an Arctic Monkeys fan. I'm still not - but check out the video for their new song "Crying Lightning" off of the new album Humbug [Domino 8/25]. Nice CGI. and nice budget.

*******

I don't know what tempted me to watch this the first time. Maybe it was the mix of two childhood favorites - minus the Rick Astley part. Astley is more of a joke than anything else. Anyway, check it

*******

I've been wanting to write about Philly's own Reading Rainbow for a while. I will soon though. Pinky swear. I'm holding it out right now. No lie, people. Lock it in. For now though, check out the vid above and more songs for your listening pleasure on their myspace

MP3: Owen - Good Friends, Bad Habits

Good news today. A long time favorite of mine - Owen - is releasing a new album appropriately titled New Leaves on Sept 22nd [via Polyvinyl]. You can pre-order the CD, a 180 gram black LP, a mixed color LP or all of the above [if you're that much of a die-hard fan] over @ the Polyvinyl site. I think you also get some sweet buttons and merch for being such a good champ.

The first track we get from New Leaves  is a nice little ditty called "Good Friends, Bad Habits" which kicks off with something a little different for Owen - a light touch of synth. Soon enough, the song goes into the usual acoustic picking style that he [should be] known for. And don't forget the kind of harsh but still lovely lyrics that are whispered ever so gently.

MP3 :: Owen - Good Friends, Bad Habits

I'm glad to see that Mike Kinsella is actually pretty consistent with his own project. But honestly, can we get a Cap'n Jazz reunion?

MP3: Monsters Of Folk - "Say Please"

I've heard about this joint project for a little while now. Just haven't gotten a chance to listen to it until now. Im case you don't know, the Monsters Of Folk are Bright Eyes' Conor Oberst, My Morning Jacket's Jim James [aka Yim Yames], M. Ward's M. Ward and Saddle Creek Records mastermind Mike Mogis. The Monster's debut album will hit stores Sept 22 via Shangri-La Music. You can grab the mp3 down below, or if you want, you can head on over to bands website and just enter the "magic word"

MP3 :: Monsters Of Folk - Say Please

[video + mp3] Wheat - Changes Is

I can really go for a solid basement show. I miss those days. Anyway...

Check out the new video for Wheat's new song "Changes Is" off of the new album White Ink, Black Ink [via The Rebel Group] which hit stores Tuesday.

Throwback Thursdays [90s Love Songs Mix]

90s love songs were either really good, really corny or just really terrible. At that age, I didn't get what the songs really meant. But back then, I thought girls had "cooties" and that they "drooled" more than they "ruled." Anyway, check out the mix:

MP3 :: The Cardigans - Lovefool
MP3 :: Mr. Big - To Be With You
MP3 :: The Backstreet Boys - As Long As You Love Me
MP3 :: Oasis - Wonderwall
MP3 :: Celine Dion - My Heart Will Go On

Alice In Wonderland - Teaser Tralier [!!!!]

wow. This comes out a day before my birthday [which is March 6th...] Can't wait! But I still think the trailer could use a song by Arcade Fire....

no?

[video + mp3] Little Joy- Next Time Around

It's summertime. I can't say enough how much I absolutely love the summer. The sun is shining bright in Allentown today, so in a few minutes, I will get to lay out on my patio and relax in the sun with my music playing...and the very first album I will listen to is going to be Little Joy's self-titled debut. Little Joy is a Brazilian/American band, and their drummer, Fabrizio Moretti, is also a member of The Strokes, a very prominent New York City band.

The song of theirs I chose to share with you is "The Next Time Around", which is the opening track to their record (which was released November 4, 2008 via Rough Trade Records). The song opens up with a very beachey feeling ukulele riff accented by a few guitar notes, and then it easily transitions into a very relaxing full band performance which will make you wish that you were spending your day at the ocean.

[mp3] NEW Islands !! - No You Don't

Oh my dear lord. I am incredibly excited to be able to post this. At roughly 4pm today, on this page , Pitchfork premiered a brand spanking new track from the band Islands from their forthcoming album, Vapours (due out September 22nd on ANTI- records). Notable about this new album, is the fact that Jamie Thompson, who had previously quit the band shortly after the release of their first record Return To The Sea , re-joined the band in time to record Vapours, their new (and 3rd overall) album.

Islands is one of my favorite bands. I've been waiting for them to release a song from their new album, and the day has finally come. To me, this song, No You Don't is truly infectiously addictive. From the more-than-catchy synth riffs to the amazing vocal performance, I think that this will be a song that you listen to over and over again.

MP3 :: Islands- No You Don't

[video] Kid Cudi w/ Kanye & Common - Make Her Say

So good. Sorry for the low video quality. It's good to hear Kanye without the auto tuner

[mp3] new Beastie Boys - Too Many Rappers

You should know by now that I really love me some Beastie Boys. Here's an unmastered version of that song they've been playing live featuring Nas from the upcoming album Hot Sauce Committee Pt. 1

[mp3] Maps & Atlases- Big Bopper Anthems

Maps & Atlases. If you've never heard of them, they are quite an earful. What style are they? Honestly, it's hard for me to say. They are very technical musically, which lends me to describe them as a "math rock" band. Yet, at the same time they have such an organic and calming feel to their sound. They beautifully blend the (from time to time elaborately) technical with just the right amount of laid-back flow. Sometimes their music sounds massive and fast, and sometimes it is multi-instrumental and you feel like you're simply breezing through it. These guys are currently getting some heavy play time on my computer and in my car.

In September, they begin a month-long tour with Ra Ra Riot and Princeton. The tour hits Philadelphia's Trocadero on October 2nd.

Passion Pit | To Kingdom Come from EFFIN' MEGA VIDEOS on Vimeo.

Here's a new joyous/apocalyptic new video for "To Kingdom Come" from that new Pashy Pit album - in case you've never heard of it before. HA. Nice mustache

Another Lily Allen video - this time for her song "22." Buy It's Not Me, It's You @ insound and def check out the vid for "F*ck You" overrrr....here

*********

At first I wasn't really a fan of Ducktails. The band not the show. The show fucking rocked. Anyway, I'm slowly catching on to the dreamy, sleepy instrumentals. It only makes sense that the video for "Parasailing" would feature slow motion monster trucks, chameleons and square dancing underneath hazy colored filters and textures. Hello, lazy summer.

[mp3] new Vivian Girls - When I'm Gone

Even though they're still fairly new as a band, Brooklyn's Vivian Girls have always known what indie-rock is all about. While listening to the debut album from last year to compare - I can fairly say that the newest track off of their upcoming album is no different. Fuzzy, raw and under cooked, yet the production quality is higher. Fortunately though, this song clocks in at a solid 3:30 as compared to the >2:00 mark for more than half of the last album.

MP3 :: Vivian Girls - When I'm Gone

[MP3] Rubik - Wasteland

I don't know about you, but music from northern countries like Iceland, Denmark and Finland is always very uplifting and spiritual. If there's anything that bands like Sigur Ros, Bjork, Efterklang, Slaraffenland can tell us, the north has to be a powerful and beautiful landscape that holds so much spirit. Now we can add Finnish band, Rubik to that list. What starts off as a vocal heavy sing-along slowly turns itself into a full fledged hope-filled sky breaker. Have I lost you??

Take a listen:

MP3 :: Rubik - Wasteland

Rubik's new album Dada Bandits hits the US on Sept 15th via Paper Tiger AV

[stream sesh] The Dodos - Time To Die

Remember when I said that I'd share a new Dodos song with you a few days ago? Well I hold my word to it. You can download a new track called "Fables" down below. But if you want to hear the entire album right now - head on over to Time To Die dot net and get your listen on. It ain't bad but it's a grower for sure.

MP3 :: The Dodos - Fables [link removed :/]

The album will be available for digital purchase on July 28th. The physical copy still won't be out until Sept 15th. I don't know how I feel about that....

[MP3] new WHY? - This Blackest Purse

A while ago I heard the news of a brand new Why? album. This morning, Pitchfork premiered a new track. This toned down piano driven Why? song off of the upcoming album Eskimo Snow is our first real glimpse into this September 2009 release. And to tell you the truth, I can not be more excited. Being a huge fan of Why? already, I'm a little biased. But you do have to admit, it's a soft solid song with the always familiar sounding and geeky Yoni Wolf

MP3 :: Why? - This Blackest Purse

Eskimo Snow comes out September 22nd via Anticon Records in the US

[MP3] Robin Pecknold - Two Headed Boy [NMH cover]

At a benefit concert in Seattle, Robing Pecknold [of everyone's fave band - Fleet Foxes] performed a cover of Neutral Milk Hotel's "Two Headed Boy." Kind of really wish I were there. If you wish the same, you can live vicariously through the MP3

[MP3] Wild Moccasins - Fruit Tea

As a new addition to my iTunes and more importantly - my 2nd Summer Mixx [in the works] - Wild Moccasins blend right in. Who are the Wild Moccasins? They are a young and talented group of musicians from Houston, Texas fronted by band founders Cody Swann and Zahira Gutierrez. They write and play bubbly, cute infectious indie pop/rock in the same vein as The Vaselines, The New Pornographers and the Pomegranates just to name a few.

MP3 :: Wild Moccasins - Fruit Tea

You can grab their debut EP Microscopic Metronomes either @ iTunes or their myspace page

Throwback Thursdays [80s Classix Edition]

UPDATE: Ah well look at that. You're in luck. In just a few hours [12 PM], The Dodos will be performing at 89.5 CIUT in Toronto. You can stream the entire thing on the stations website. I'm sure they'll play some new stuff.

[Stream] Tyondai Braxton (of Battles) - Uffe's Woodshop

[via Warp]

It's been more than 2 years since Battles' debut LP rocked the indie world to its knees. And for some reason, they never quite hung around as long as we liked. Thankfully, one of the guys from Battles by the name of Tyondi Braxton is set to release his solo album entitled Central Market on Sept 15th on Warp Records. Check out a new song in the fancy little player above.

[Reissue] The Beastie Boys - Ill Communication

Just as I thought. The Beastie Boys will be reissuing one of my fave albums of all time - Ill Communication on July 14th via Capitol Records. They've already released reissues of Paul's Boutique and Check Your Head. This is the same kinda deal - tons of packages including a digital download, a double standard 180 gram vinyl, a double CD package and of course the mighty limited Collector's Vinyl package which is pretty intense. Check all of em out on their website and get your pre-order on. While you're there, you can also listen to the entire remastered version right now since it's streaming

Be sure to keep a look out for more Beastie news soon...

[Video] Bowerbirds play Bright Future for They Shoot Music

New song by the trio performed solo style by Phil Moore. If you haven't already go out and buy Bowerbirds new album Upper Air that dropped today [really yesterday if you want to be a technical douchebag] on Dead Oceans. It's real nice. Take that from a blogger who blogged about them almost constantly earlier this year.

[Short Stack] Riceboy Sleeps // The Drums // My Gold Mask // Atmosphere // Florence And The Machine

You may remember the introduction to the Sigur Ros side project Riceboy Sleeps thanks to that huge indie comp Dark Was The Night a little while ago. Here's another new song from the upcoming debut LP entitled Boy 1904.

[Stream Sesh] The Very Best - Warm Heart Of Africa

If you're anything like me - you hear a killer single by some group and get so attached to it that it's all you can listen to for a day or two until you just need something new. Thankfully, I found more of The Very Best to satisfy my music needs. The Very Best are a duo comprised of Esau Mwamwaya & Radioclit who released a mix tape entitled The Very Best Mixtape a ways back. More recently they released a single called called Warm Heart Of Africa ft. Vampire Weekend frontman Ezra Koenig in preparation for their debut LP later this year. It was going to be on the Best Of 09 So Far list but like I said then...I felt bad for not including some songs.

I'm not going to lie, I totally didn't know they had a mix tape and I'm listening to it right now for the first time [nice Architecture In Helsinki sample-age]. I seriously cannot wait for the debut LP.

[MP3] Times New Viking - No Time No Hope

I haven't really heard much of Ohio's Times New Viking besides one song a ways back. To be honest with you, I wasn't too impressed. I decided to give them another shot when I read that they'd be releasing a new album in September on Matador Records. The first track from Born Again Revisited starts off with garage grunge guitar and major feedback but if you listen close enough, their is a melody. Overall, it's a pretty solid 60's induced garage anthem. Set your radar to follow this trio if you haven't already. Good things to come

Born Again Revisited will be out September 22nd via Matador Records

[MP3] Neon Indian - Terminally Chill

If the name doesn't make you want to check these guys [guy and girl] out, then I don't know what will. I heard about Neon Indian not long ago via GvB with the song "I Should Have Taken Acid With You." Neon Indian is "an elusive new project from composer Alan Palomo [from VEGA]". Bedroom synth pop with dreamy soft vocals. Their debut LP Psychic Chasms will be out October 13th via Lefse Records.

[MP3] Girls - Solitude

San Fran's Girls have been making some noise lately. A few weeks ago I was watching their video for 'Hellhole Ratrace' and almost fell in love with the trippy catchy alt pop that they create. They haven't sold me yet. But something says they might when the new album entitled well..Album comes out on 9/22 via Matador Recs

[MP3] Fool's Gold - Surprise Hotel

Afro-pop seems to be everywhere these past couple years. I have no problem with that at all. Fool's Gold [from LA - not the movie] is yet another band gettin' down with some hot grooves. Check out their new song Surprise Hotel and don't tell me you're not dancing. After the pretty extensive jam intro to get you going, the song really starts at the 1:30 minute mark when the vocals come in. Around 4:06, the structure breaks open and you are lead into a full on afro pop jam with faster drums, a killer bass line, and some sick horn playing. Even though the total song length pushes toward 7 minutes, you're still left with room for more. Dessert please? Remember - two 'S's' mean it's sweet...

Look for info on a debut LP sometime soon

Fool's Gold is now on IAMSOUND Records along with Telepath, Little Boots, Suckers and few others

Top 20 Faves of 2009 [so far....]

So today marks the end of the first half of the year. Holy crap. Well so far, 2009 has been chock full of simply amazing tunes. And this is only the first half of it!!!

I actually started this playlist a week ago with the intention of only showcasing my top 10 faves. I made the list on my iTunes. 35 songs later....yea. It was hard. I finally got a chance to really narrow it down to 20. Which I think is a good number. I don't want to leave songs out. I already feel bad for cutting out 15 songs. Anyway...

To tell you the truth, a lot of these songs have been on many lists. Either from my own blog [this one] or other music blogs. But these songs deserve that kind of attention. Or else they wouldn't be on any top lists, right?

Enough blabbering. Here it is:
20: The Antlers - Bear
19: Micachu And The Shapes - Golden Phone
18: The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart - This Love Is Fucking Right
17: Real Estate - Beach Comber
16: Sunset Rubdown - You Go On Ahead
15: YACHT- Psychic City
14: Free Energy - Dream City
13: Japandroids - Young Hearts Spark Fire
12: St Vincent - Actor Out Of Work
11: Phoenix - Listzomania
10: Discovery - So Insane
9: White Rabbits - Percussion Gun
8: VEGA - No Reasons
7: Grizzly Bear - Two Weeks
6: Here We Go Magic - Only Pieces
5: Cymbals Eat Guitars - And The Hazy Sea
4: Bat For Lashes - Glass
3: The Love Language - Sparxxx
2: Passion Pit - Little Secrets
1: Animal Collective - Brother Sport

[MP3] Gospel Gossip - Nashville

Sounds like summer in Northfield, Minnesota. I'm talking about Minnesota's Gospel Gossip and their new EP Dreamland. Think dense 90's sounding alternative rock with strong female vocals. Why the summer metaphor? Because I'm sitting outside and it's humid as hell and nothing sounds better right now than Gospel Gossip's song Nashville.

You can buy their debut LP Sing Into My Mouth @ amazon dot com. They're not on Insound. Which is weird because they deserve much more coverage. Maybe this new EP will do the trick

You can also download another song from the new EP over at their website
