[NEW MUSIC] Donny Hue & The Colors

Now in Brooklyn via DC, Donny Hue and The Colors [dont worry, it took me a while to get it, too], are ready to release their 2nd LP entitled Letter From New Virginia. Recorded in a barn in the state of [you guessed it] Virginia, the new album has that homey, acoustic folk that one would expect. In a really good way.

The LP's first single "I Speak Of The Hayseed Cousins" is a full on sing along folk jam aimed to make you dance, sing and drink tons of home-made moonshine.

Letter From New Virginia is out on The Kora Records on June 23rd. Kora Records are releasing one track per week from the albums B-Sides until it comes out.

[MP3] BLK JKS - Lakeside

Sometimes I come across bands that I think are okay. Sometimes they suck [and I'll be the first to admit it]. But sometimes there are bands that blow my fucking ears off - in a really good way. Blk Jks is one of the latter. Hailing from Johannesburg, South Africa, Blk Jks create loud, psychedelic South African pop music with ease. They implement heavy bass, crisp guitar, whistling, and spacey vocals to capture something new for our ears.

The cover of their debut EP entitled Mystery conveys to us a story that we can't clearly figure out. It can be fun. It can be fleeting. It can be dangerous. Either way, it's definitely enticing.

Blk Jks debut EP was released back in March [3/10/09] on Secretly Canadian Records. I honestly can't wait to hear more from these guys.

Blk Jks - Lakeside

Oh hey! Look who's coming to Philllyy:

6/3/09 @ IRVING PLAZA / NYC WITH FEMI KUTI

[NEW MUSIC] Free Energy - Dream City

Newly made Philadelphians, Free Energy, are ready to release their debut album this fall on DFA Records.

The first single "Dream City" will undoubtedly bring you to the 1970s when fuzzy guitar solos and mullets ruled the world. This song is to be listened to in a red convertible while rocking out your finest pair of white denim and a freshly shaven mustache. If you can't afford all of the above, I guess sunglasses and beer will do.

Moral of the story: put this on your summer mix.

"hey we're comin out / dancin down town / bleed like whatever we dream about / and we're moving through the night / cruisin cross town/ lost in the endless sound."

Free Energy - Dream City

[NEW MUSIC] Shuta Hasunuma - Pop Ooga

All the way from Tokyo, Japan, Shuta Hasunuma comes to us with a suitcase of fun toys for our ears to play with. Shuta's latest double LP Pop Ooga Plus is jam packed with soft digital bounces, touches of guitar, sparse keyboard, and the occasional whispered vocals. Shuta uses these elements to create lush dreamscapes that are perfect for any season. These well structured songs make it easy for the head to move and the feet to tap. And it all seems to be made so effortlessly. Just like magic.

Blog Love - Helping Brothers [and Sisters] Out

[NEW MUSIC] My Gold Mask

Let me introduce to you a sweet new band from Chicago, My Gold Mask.

What started out as a friendly home recording experiment, My Gold Mask just released their first collection of songs which are now available for digital download and/or on cassette. The duo [Gretta Rochelle and Jack Armondo] create beautiful [yet dark] music out of quiet guitar and solid, pounding drums. A lot of the songs are rounded out by Gretta's powerful voice which demands attention as it flutters in from the distance. I highly recommend grabbing the digital download. And if you have a cassette player, be sure to grab that too.

Here are some MP3's to get you started [you're welcome]:
My Gold Mask - Bitches
My Gold Mask - Your Coo Ka Choo
My Gold Mask - Monomania

[NEW MUSIC] That's Him! That's The Guy! - An Army Life

Well I finally know who "that guy" is. He's a brilliant duo from Michigan [now in NYC] comprised of David Martin and Joseph Scott. That's Him! That's The Guy! just released their debut album An Army Life which is introduced to us with quiet eerie feedback. The stormy winds are soon covered with a sweet banjo melody. Punctuated with soft violins, familiar vocals and the occasional xylophones, An Army Life tells tales of divorce through the eyes of a military brat. This is an album that should be listened to with headphones so that the soft honey sounds can be dissolved into the ears.

An Army Life is out now on Jumberlack Media. Purchase the album and find out who the Jumberlacks are on myspace dot com

Throwback Thursday [The Letter "P" Edition]

Todays Throwback Thursday is a tight mix of everything from the first album I ever owned until my first year of college back in 2004 - All within the letter P. Thanks iTunes for being so organized.

Paul Simon - The Obvious Child

This song brings me back to a time when things like bills and laundry didn't matter. Whenever the family would go on a road trip, we would pack the car and turn up the volume so everyone could hear the brilliant pounding percussion of Grupo Cultural Olodum with Paul Simon's gentle crooning on Rhythm Of The Saint. I'm glad they got me into this at such an early age. Why deny the obvious child of such a great album?

Pavement - Cut Your Hair

I actually didn't get into Pavement until my first year of college. I heard them yea, but I didn't like them. By the time I got into school, all of my high school memories were washed away [mostly by booze] and my head was clear. Ready for a new life.

Pretty Girls Make Graves - All Medicated Geniuses

I only have one really solid memory of this song. Sitting on a bed with old friends listening to music. Simple yea, but the song grabbed me and shook me out of my shoes. The instant I got home, I snatched some $ and went over to my local record shop. The mission was a success.

Pinback - Loro

Pinback was another late bloomer for me. This time thanks to an ex-girlfriend of mine who was obsessed with the soft, delicate whispers of Rob Crow.

Pearl Jam - Leash

I'm not gonna lie, I'm a pretty big Pearl Jam fan. My sister bought me this album [VS.] when I was 8 years old. She knew I was into them because I used to stare at the tv when the video for Jeremy came on. There are a lot of songs on this album that bring me back but I'd have to say that this one is my favorite. Oh, the 90's. How I miss you.

Crystal Antlers - Luxury Wafers Sessions - Memorize from Luxury Wafers on Vimeo.

Crystals Antlers just did a pretty rad in-studio session in Cali @ Chessvolt Studios for the Luxury Wafers Sessions. Based out of Los Angeles, Luxury Wafers is a music blog that grabs bands on tour and asks them to play in the studio for live, uncut sessions. Check out some free mp3's of the sessions down below. Be sure to bookmark and check out other sessions by Abe Vigoda, Heartless Bastards and many more.

"Everybody plays in the live room together. After the inital setup and tests for levels, we roll the session and see where it goes."

"The Luxury Wafers videos are so special because they capture and provide a glimpse into the intimacy of the setting. Watching the videos is a unique opportunity to be right there with indie musicians playing live in a relaxed studio environment."

Wildscreen.TV Presents They Shoot Music ft. Wavves, Xiu Xiu, Crystal Antlers + more

I was first introduced to the concept of the "Take Away Show" a while ago by none other then the mighty Blogotheque. Ever since then I've come across other sites that do the same thing, but with much less impact and credibility. Well I think that may have changed. Wildscreen.TV has a channel called They Shoot Music who invites bands to play a 2 song session during their stay in Vienna.

They feature bands like Wavves, Xiu Xiu, The Mae Shi, Micah P Hinson, Crystal Antlers, Islands and soo many more. Check out the vid above and bookmark this mother effer

[also be sure check out Black Cab Sessions]

PS: I think the video above just plays whatever it wants. Keep refreshing if you want to see other sessions

[Mom Does Reviews] Grizzly Bear / Passion Pit / St. Vincent / Phoenix

Mom's are the best. They're caring, sweet, motivating and most of all - honest. In honor of mother's day, I played a few of the most anticipated and most talked about albums of 2009 [so far] for my mom. Here she'll tackle the intricate details of Grizzly Bear's latest offering - Veckatimest, Passion Pit's Manners, St. Vincent's Actor and Phoenix's Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix. Let's get to it, shall we:

Grizzly Bear [May 26 2009 - Warp Recs]
Grizzly Bear - Two Weeks
--They need to stop playing the same piano chord. The other instruments were good though. What was that?--
Grizzly Bear - Cheerleader
--Eh. It's okay--

Passion Pit [May 19 2009 - Frenchkiss Recs]
Passion Pit - Make Light
--That's a 'him'?? NO WAAYY! Noooo...It's a her. You're fooling me--
Passion Pit - Little Secrets
--Has a good beat. As long as he doesn't try to hit higher notes...it's good. Yea that one's good--

St. Vincent [Out Now on 4AD Recs]
St. Vincent - Strangers
--What is she saying? Boring boring boring boring boring. I've had enough--
St. Vincent - Actor Out Of Work
-She has a good voice. But she has to take the cotton balls out of her mouth-

Phoenix [May 26 2009 - Glass Note Recs]
Phoenix - Listzomania
--This is making me tired. Next--
Phoenix - 1901
--This one I like. Good tune. Can't understand the words, but good tune--

[video] Animal Collective on The Late Show

If you read any of my tweets or saw my stat on Fbook last night, you know that I was watching The Late Show w/ David Letterman and patiently waiting for Animal Collective to come on and perform. I should have just waited for it to be on youtube because honestly, I thought it was sub par [for AC standards anyway]. What was with the dancers? No drums for Avey Tare? mreh.

Be sure to tune into Letterman on May 20th when his musical guest will be Grizzly Bear. Maybe they can top last years performance of "Two Weeks." It'll be tough. Stephen Colbert will also be showing up which I think is pretty fantastic. Colbert has a long history of hating bears [aka "godless killing machines."] Shred down? Threat down? We will see...

[playlist] Throwback Thursdays!

I've been listening to a lot of new music lately. And though it's all brilliant and beautiful, it can sometimes be overwhelming. Therefor, I present to you Throwback Thursdays. [video] Efterklang @ FUC Philly

You might remember my review of this show back in March and how I said that they almost literally tore the house down. Well now you can see that I wasn't exaggerating. I'll stop writing and let the video speak for itself.

Cinco de Playlist

In honor of Cinco de Mayo, I gathered a few songs for your enjoyment that either come from country of origin or have been influenced by their music.

Los Dynamite are an indie-rock band based out of Mexico City who write songs in english - very well I should say. Their last album Greatest Hits was released back in 2006. Peter Hook of New Order says "Sounds like Mark E. Smith on ecstasy!" I think it's worth a listen:
Los Dynamite - Ready Ready

I seem to post about Beirut a lot, but whatever. Earlier this year he released an EP called March of the Zapotec with the help and influence of Oaxacan musicians Banda Jimenez. At first listen I was a little disappointed. Then I saw him perform these songs live with the Vassar Orkestar and I was blown away.
Beirut - The Shrew

A few days ago my friend Becky did an excellent post about how Mexican Institute of Sound is greater than the swine flu. Simply scroll down to see it.
Mexican Institute of Sound - Cumbia

Rodrigo Y Gabriela have been in my iTunes for quite a while. A good friend of mine used to work for their distribution and gave me a copy of their s/t debut album. I've been hooked ever since.
Rodrigo Y Gabriela - Tamacun

Now go drink some tequila and enjoy your 5th day of May!

NEW Jason Lytle to stream on NPR Tonight

In case you haven't heard, Jason Lytle [ex Grandaddy leader] has a debut solo album coming out in a few weeks [May19th to be exact] called Your Truly, The Commuter via Anti Records. This fuzz induced rock album has some many qualities of good ol' Grandaddy that it practically IS a new Grandaddy album.

If you haven't listened to Yours Truly, The Commuter yet - and I know many who have - NPR will be streaming the entire album starting tonight at 11:59 PM.

Mexican Institute of Sound > Swine Flu

Hi, Digidreams readers! I'm <3ecky, here, tweet here, and always eat my veggies. Enough introduction; let's get to it.

Laureana Toledo Courtesy of Nacional Records

While everyone's blaming Mexico for their little piggie problem, I suggest we take those scared and angry feelings, crumple them into a teenie tiny ball, throw them out the highest window you can find, and take a listen to the bad-ass music coming from this plagued country. I present to you: Mexican Institute of Sound.

Mexican Institute of Sound is the piglet creation of DJ, producer, and Mexico EMI president Camilo Lara. Lara is a Mexican music trendsetter known for his annual Christmas compilations. His music mixes classic Mexican music elements with modern electronic music techniques. The result is interesting, quirky, inspiring music that engages and intrigues. Lara's music has a smooth, fresh flow, each song with its own unique vibe. Some tracks are rather ambient and loungy, lacking vocals or cultural influence; others are are heavy on latin influence with a beat to get your hips shakin' on the dance floor (or bedroom, in front of your mirror, practicing your shimmies) . The MIS experience is like a musical safari, adventuring through an array of electronic wildlife. (No pigs allowed.)

Check it out:

You can pig out on the group's latest album cleverly named Soy Sauce (2009) for just $5 here. Go ahead. Don't be a swine. Buy good music. (See what I did there?)

Thanks, Mexico.
