MP3: Freelance Whales - Generator ^ First Floor

What starts off with a mysterious hum soon becomes interrupted with banjos, xylophones and happiness. I'm talking of newcomers Freelance Whales and their song "Generator ^ First Floor" from their up and coming debut LP Weathervanes. Sounds like they took a road trip from Queens, NY [where they're from] to pick up Sufjan Stevens in Michigan and ended up in Canada to visit Broken Social Scene. I'm sure they won't be offended by the similarities.

VIDEO: Sunny Day Real Estate @ Fallon 9/29/09

Seems like Fallon is on a roll with musical guests. Too bad I can't say the same for his comedy. OUCH. Somehow, he got one of my fave's last night. I tried to stay up to watch it but I fell asleep like 5 minutes before they went on. And this is why I love the internet.

MP3: Little Dragon - Blinking Pigs

I don't know what it is, but I tend to have an affinity for european music as of late. It's this strange attraction of hushed vocals, lush blankets of sound and flowing thoughts that go well with the overcast of an impending autumn. Today, my email held this little gem from Gothenburg, Sweden.

Little Dragon are about to release their sophomore LP entitled Machine Dreams on Oct 20th via Peacefrog. This is the first single entitled "Blinking Pigs"

VIDEO: Dirty Projectors @ Fallon - When The World Comes To An End

Dirty Projectors made another round on their late night circuit last night with Jimmy Fallon. They played a brand new song "When The World Comes To An End." It's so neat to hear that the girls can actually harmonize like they do without any recording magic. Fallon thinks so too: "How'd you do that?"

Earlier yesterday I saw a tweet by The Roots ?uestlove saying "Man. Dirty Projectors came into our room and demonstrated their awesomeness. How cool is it for them to do this?" which then linked to a twitvid of them playing the song acousticly. ?uestlove tells them that he'd "follow ya'll till the end of the earth." Adorable

SATURDAY IN VIDEOS: Sufjan Stevens // Throw Me The Statue // St Vincent // Thom Yorke

Sufjan and co performing a new 7 minute trombone epic performed at one of his many "intimate" shows in Itchaca, NY.

********

Throw Me The Statues new video for their song "Hi-Fi Goon" shows the guys going on a wild elephant chase though town [after they played Jumangi?] and end up catching sasquatch - wait no, it's a pretty girl in a white fur coat. I guess they gave up and decided to play poolside. hm

********

I know I'm pretty late on posting this video, but I don't really care because I'm just as tranced as the people that are in it. At least it's not as hard to watch as her last one was - [it was actually a really really good video]

********

Thom Yorke recently performed an acoustic version of Reckoner for the premier of the movie Age Of Stupid via satellite. I have nothing clever and witty to say about this, sorry

VIDEO: Efterklang - Cutting Ice To Snow [from Performing Parades DVD]

After seeing them live, Efterklang is easily my favorite show of 2009. Hands down. It's hard to top the huge emotion and sound they bring to the stage [especially a small stage in a church]. Luckily for you, they recorded a live DVD in Copenhagen with The National Danish Chamber Orchestra. Check out Efterklang performing their ever hopeful track "Cutting Ice To Snow" from the upcoming Performing Parades DVD out Oct 19th.

VIDEO: Fool's Gold - Surprise Hotel

Last year, Fool's Gold released a video for the same song which featured them just playing at least 3 different shows. Bland for a video if you ask me. I guess they figured that they should probably step it up. And oh, did they ever! Funny old guys walking and dancing with dogs, babes kissing a lizard in the pool and a sexy bikini clad saxophone player gettin down. Wish I were invited to this party!

DEBUT LP: Real Estate - "Real Estate"

Summer is officially over yeah, but does that mean that summer jams have to end? No way Mr. Jose. Real Estate [from NJ] came into my iTunes life earlier this year via the Underwater Peoples sampler. Even before that, they've released an annoying amount of EP's. On November 17th, their first official real-deal self-titled LP will be released onto the world in all it's summery chill glory via Woodsist. Beginning in October, they will be hitting the road with  many familiar names. Be sure to check em out!

TRACKLIST + MP3: New Moon Soundtrack - Death Cab For Cutie

I never got into the whole Twilight thing. After looking at this tracklist for the upcoming movie New Moon, I feel kind of happy but awkward. Do I embrace the fact that indie rock is having it's day and let it ride or feel strange that teeny-bopper-superfans will become huge fans of Grizzly Bear? It'll probably be the first. I highly doubt the latter. and to tell you the truth, this tracklist kind of reminds me of this charity album that dropped earlier this year...

1. Death Cab for Cutie: "Meet Me on the Equinox"
2. Band of Skulls: "Friends"
3. Thom Yorke: "Hearing Damage"

MP3: Port O'Brien - My Will Is Good [Bodega Girls Remix]

[Port O'Brien]

I would've never thought that Port O'Brien's campfire friendly indie/folk sing-along songs would make for a good electronic remix. I am proven wrong by the Bodega Girls with their take on the song "My Will Is Good" from Port O'Brien's new album Threadbare. It's like the dance-floor took a trip to Alaska to go sailing and hit an iceberg of creativity. or vice-versa.

SATURDAY IN VIDEOS: Muse // Vivian Girls // Kid Cudi // Beer In Hell Trailer

I usually wait until Saturday to make the video post. But for some reason I posted a lot of videos this week. My bad. Here are 4 that I missed out on:

Muse is victorious, teddy bears are not so cute and faces will melt.

Simple is good. Now I'm blind

Last Friday Kid Cudi showed up @ Letterman. Great hand gestures, singing about getting stoned, Ratatat using Slash's signature guitar pose and Dave being genuinely funny.

This is going to be hilarious. So glad they have the hotel poop scene.

MP3: Bear In Heaven - Lovesick Teenagers

This week has been nuts considering how relaxing and lazy my summer was. School is back in full throttle/study-my-ass-off-so-i-can-get-the-hell-out-of-here mode and I finally have a weekend of nothing to do except unwind. I took tonight [friday] to be a loser and snoop around various websites of my liking. I ended up coming across the Grizzly Bear website and listening to their new favorite song by a band named Bear In Heaven. I guess bands from Brooklyn really like bears? I don't know, but check out their song Lovesick Teenagers

Their sophomore album Beast Rest Forth Mouth will be out Oct 13th via Hometapes. Get your pre-order on right now!

MP3s: João Orecchia - Midnight Serenade + Play Pretend

Johannesburg's João Orecchia doesn't create Paul Simonesque or Vampire Weekendish South African influenced pop music [nothing wrong with them at all - just saying]. No, he eloquently mixes melody with electronics and lets his glitch pop inspiration take the reigns of the collaboration.

I don't know much about Norway's Real Ones, but I do like what I've heard. Check out the first single from their upcoming US debut All For The Neighbourhood called "Every Dog Has His Day" - a happy little diddly full of banjos, violins and life lessons about luck and karma.

MP3: Micah P Hinson - In The Pines [Leadbelly Cover]

When you hear the name Micah P Hinson, it brings to mind songs of loneliness, darkness, defeat and heartbreak. But somewhere beneath [the rose - see what i did there?], you can find love and hope. It came to my surprise that this Texan born phenom will be releasing an album of covers that showcases his take on some his favorite timeless classics. All Dressed Up And Smelling Of Strangers is out Sept 21st via Full Time Hobby. Check out his intense cover of Leadbelly's "In The Pines" down below.

SATURDAY IN VIDEOS: Micachu & The Shapes // Grizzly Bear // Sufjan Stevens // White Lies // Empire Of The Sun

This was premiered on a few days ago on bjork.com. When interviewed for NPR, Bjork had these kind words to say:

"I saw her in London, in June, a year ago and I was really excited about her. I thought it was that sort of 'do it yourself' approach, with all these little guitars and her attitude was really fresh… think it's really, really fun. (She)is a bit of a prankster really, isn't she?"

Aw, Bjork. Well anyway, here's the DIY-ish tree/photobooth video for "Turn Me Well" which is off of her debut album Jewellery.

What do fencing, stop watches and a red ball have to do with Grizzly Bear? I have no clue. But Sean Pecknold [brother of that Fleet Foxes dude] who directed this vid probably does. Or doesn't. Who knows.

THROWBACK THURSDAYS: 60s Revolution Clasix Part 1

Growing up, my father introduced me to vinyl - the detailed crackling and authenticity of that spinning black circle of wonder. I think one of the first records he put on for me was Simon & Garfunkel's "Bookends." We would sit and we would listen to his collection. To this day, he still talks about how great the 60s were as we shuffle those black plastic circles from sleeve to needle, needle to sleeve. Memories of Woodstock, protesting, Joan Baez, Greatful Dead, Bobby Dylan [etc, etc] stream from his conscious like they happened just the other day. I'm in awe

MP3: The Very Best - Warm Heart Of Africa [Alan Wilkis Remix]

If you thought The Very Best's "Warm Heart Of Africa" was as upbeat and danceable as it could be, then you haven't listened to Alan Wilkis' remix. It's like they went back in time, found their souls in the 80's and joined Passion Pit in taking over the world. Well done

MP3: Pains Of Being Pure At Heart - Higher Than The Stars [St. Etienne REMIX]

Last month I posted a new song from Pains Of Being Pure At Heart [POBPAH for short] entitled "Higher Than The Stars" from their upcoming EP of the same name. Recently, I got word that Saint Etienne [of 90s UK pop fame] remixed the shoe-gazing pop song and made it a little more accessible for dance floors across the nation.

Check it

MP3: Kurt Vile - Hunchback

Hope everyone had a killer Labor Day weekend. I know I did [hence, the lack of posts].

This morning, Matador Records posted a new Kurt Vile mp3 from his upcoming album Childish Prodigy [Oct 6th]. "Hunchback" opens the new album with a darkness that we didn't see a few months ago with "Overnight Religion" - a lighter/airy-er jam. Both are shrouded in mystery and lots of reverb.

SATURDAY IN VIDEOS: HEALTH//Holiday Shores//Wild Beasts//Bonnie 'Prince' Billy

HEALTH- Die Slow

HEALTH has been at the top of my playlist lately. I can't get enough of them. If I had to describe this video using only three words, I would have to say "Dancing, people-face, murder-orgy."

*******

Holiday Shores- Bradley Bear (Acoustic[Live])

There are really no funny one-liners that I can spurt for this video. This is just a raw (and very well-done) acoustic live performance of one of my favorite songs by Holiday Shores. It's off of their album Columbus'd The Whim. Go get it. Now.

*******

Wild Beasts- All The King's Men

Spectacular band. Spectacular sophomore album. Spectacular song. Band dressed like monks. Pretty women fire cult. Done.

*******

Bonnie 'Prince' Billy- How About Thank You [via Stereogum via Pitchfork]

The solemn tone of this country music inspired song seems too serious to have a video capable of inspiring some laughs, but I was surprised by Will Oldham (using the moniker of Bonnie 'Prince' Billy)in this one. Dance Dance duel. Yep.

VIDEO: St. Vincent @ Jimmy Kimmel 9/2/09

I forgot to watch Kimmel last night to catch St. Vincent's live performance. I guess having to wake up @ 6:00am would do that. Thankfully, the wonders of youtube can recap her and her band of merry brass instruments bringing "Marrow" to the plate. I didn't really think that the song would translate on late night tv as well as it did. It's like an upbeat nightmare that squeaks and squeals underneath the floorboards. and those eyes...

MP3: Matt & Kim - Daylight (DJ Troublemaker Remix ft. De La Soul)

DJ Troublemaker has done a shit load of tracks this year. 2009 isn't even over yet. From remixing heavy hitter Mastodon to tackling the indie crazy of the summer of Phoenix's 1901. The man can make a mean mix. This time it's for one of my favorites - Matt & Kim's "Daylight." Spice it up with a nice touch of De La Soul aaannd, done.

While I was on my page, I saw a tweet from one of my favorite hip-hop artists, Cage. He had a link to this video. It's a video that defines his live performances, as well as a little background info on the conception and production of his new album, Depart From Me (released 7/7/09 on Definitive Jux Records). Enjoy!

[music + art video] Kseniya Simonova - Sand Animation

Hey. I've been really sick lately, hence my lack of any posts. Hopefully I will start feeling better soon, I have many things that I want to share. But, anyway, I just saw this video and I decided that I needed to post it right away. It's a perfect example of how visual art and music can portray a stirring and emotional story. It's a bit of a long video, and it's Ukrainian, but I think you will really enjoy the progression, and how the mood of the music is shown through a live sand animation.

VIDEO: Dirty Projectors @ Letterman 8/31/09

After sitting through Dave's Late Show and listening to Howie Mandel use up most of the time to talk about his OCD, Rumer Willis [daughter of Demi and Bruce] had to give up her spot until another day just to let Dirty Projectors do their thing. Thank you, Ms. Willis. We didn't want to make another indie band angry that they didn't get to play Letterman.

Check out DP performing "Cannibal Resource":

MP3: Jay-Z - Empire State Of Mind [ft. Alicia Keys]

If you were on twitter yesterday and you follow music bloggers, you would know that Jay-Z's Blueprint 3 leaked in the afternoon. If you actually read the tweets, you would also know that it isn't that good. As a whole, there are some really amazing tracks and some really terrible/skippable tracks. "Empire State Of Mind" featuring Alicia Keys [not the collab with Empire Of The Sun...don't even...] is the former - a solid beat, not too many studio tricks, tight rhymes and Alicia's soaring vocals make this track a stand-out. The lyrics are a spot on tribute to New York as he shows his love for the big city.

So yes...let's hear it for New York.

MP3: HEALTH - Before Tigers [CFCF Remix]

HEALTH's experimental noise rock [or whatever] just got a nice remix treatment by CFCF with their new song "Before Tigers." CFCF somehow managed to turn the jumbling Tigers into a laid back subdued kitty cat through the use of synths and summer.
