[video] Jay-Z - D.O.A.

Jay-Z's "D.O.A" Video!

Saw this vid earlier this morning. Then I tweeted about it. Then I went to school. Thought I'd go back and share it. Is it just me, or did Jay lose a lot of weight

[MP3] new Cymbals Eat Guitars - Tunguska

Earlier this year New Jersey natives Cymbals Eat Guitars released one of my faves of 2009, Why There Are Mountains. The album gained a lot of positive feedback from all the big guns including an 8.3 from Pitchfork. Even though I take everything from PFork with a grain of salt, they did right on this one.

For a limited time, you can surf on over to their myspace page to grab a new song called Tunguska by adding your email to their mailing list. I did it. They sent it right away. No effing around. I like that

[Video] Grizzly Bear brings Cheerleader to Fallon

This week/weekend has been very strange to say the least. First MJ and now Billy Mays have left us in the course of 3 days. Real shitty. Real shitty.

In other news, I've been kind of MIA on the blog action lately due to school, work and some weekend play in my city of choice - Philadelphia. I'll be back in full force pretty soon. Don't worry baby birds. I'll feed you soon.

Here's a nice vid from Friday's Jimmy Fallon featuring Grizzly Bear to hold you over:

[MP3] Noah and The Whale - The First Days Of Spring

I'm skipping out on the Weekend Fundown. I'm sorry. Not really. I'll share a new[ish] song instead.

Noah And The Whale released one of my fave albums of 2008 last year with Peaceful, The World Lays Me Down. I first got into them by watching the always care-free styles of Vincent Moon's Take Away Shows. Watching them play Rocks And Daggers in a train in Paris still makes me wish I were actually there.

The new album entitled The First Days Of Spring is due out August 31st. You can read more about the album and a new film written by the gang themselves on their official blog

[Album Review] The Mars Volta - Octahedron

posted by Jeremy

The Mars Volta, "Octahedron" (Warner Bros.)
I forgot how much I liked The Mars Volta. So I went back and listened to all their material - five studio albums, two extended players and one live album. Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, Cedric Bixler-Zavala are Grammy wining artists who won Best Progressive Rock Band at the 2009 Grammy's. Their new album Octahedron is a bit on the softer side when compared to the others. Personally, I liked Frances the Mute which came out in 2005. Their sound is described as punk rock, jazz fusion, with a latin spice to it. For those of you who don't know or never really listened to them, they have a big list of albums and in my opinion none of them sound the same so you might like their heavier sound or their newer stuff like this one.

The album kicks off with a soft touch on "Since We've Been Wrong", brings some serious spaced-out-rock jam on "Teflon" and the dynamic "Halo Of Nembutals." "With Twilight As My Guide" sounds just like its title with gloomy acoustics and haunting effects, and "Desperate Graves" is a dose of heavier aggression. The cd closes with the double shot of "Copernicus," which sends you into deep electronics, and "Luciforms," with a trippy opening that builds into a nice euphoria of sound. All the songs have a haunting tone and his lyrics tell tales of heartbreak. I give this one a 7.5/10

RIP Michael Jackson

We lost a pop icon and a music legend today. Let us not forget the wonderful music he gave to us and not to mention the soul and the passion he had for it. He was the "king of pop" for a reason. Isn't Thriller still the best selling album in history? That's what I thought...

Ya got to be startin summthin. PYT

[MP3] Mikky Ekko - Sedated

Yesterday I got an email from soundcloud that someone actually sent me a song using soundcloud. I got all giddy and excited. Then I went to listen to the song. I was surprised by what was there. A comforting but dark and mysterious track by Mikky Ekko called Sedated. It opens with quiet oooo's and then soon falls right into the groove of relaxation that has the power to take you away by your hair and keep you afloat by it's dense sound

Take a peek:

[video] Badly Drawn Boy- Once Around The Block

Now that summer is upon us, and today was the first warm and rainless day in weeks, I get such a thrill out of driving around town with some of my favorite summer jams on. For some reason, I always associate the amazing Damon Gough, also known as Badly Drawn Boy, with drives in the sunshine with my windows down.

This song is one of my favorites by Badly Drawn Boy. The video for it makes me infinitely happy, and the song and whole album (The Hour Of The Bewilderbeast) brings me back in time to when I first fell in love with my wife, because we first listened to it together on a nice long drive...in the summer.

He hasn't released anything since a single in February of 2008, entitled The Time Of Times. I am hoping that he is planning on releasing something new in 2009.

[MP3] Trevor Giuliani - Wasting Your Town

Breezy summer atmospheric chill mode hang out tunes. That's the best way to describe a lot of the music I've been receiving in the inbox and listening to and totally enjoying. Most of it is just perfect for driving halfway across the country to a music fest. or just driving anywhere for that matter [can't wait for lolla]. Trevor Giuliani is no exception.

Originally juggling between CT and NYC, Giuliani [not ex-Mayor dude] recently moved out to Portland, OR to start his music making. His debut album called Subcontrario (In Stereo) is out July 21st via Dovecote Records.

Check out this free MP3 of "Wasting Your Town" taken from the aforementioned debut LP:

[NEW 2 ME MP3] Drink Up Buttercup

Drink Up Buttercup have been on my listening que for a little while. I've been hearing some good things about this local Philly group. Now I know why. With that said, I'm going to try to do with this without any obvious band comparisons....

One of their latest songs Farewell Captain [out now on their US debut 7"] starts with big chants and big chunky sound. Not to mention the wobbly and goofy keyboard pounding which turns out to be catchy as hell. About halfway through it all breaks apart and starts to wander and float away into circusy psychedelic oblivion. Another fav is an older song called Gods and Gentlemen which begs to be compared to The Beatles...god dammit...ugh...

...just take a listen for yourself

[introducing...] Tony. Tony T.

Hey anyone and everyone...I'm Tony. I was recently asked to start contributing to this amazing blog, which is just really, really awesome. I have been a huge fan of this for quite some time, so to be able to divulge my musical thoughts and likes through Digital Dreams is simply really cool. Big ups to Evan for giving me the opportunity. Evan is the shit.

I've been busy lately, though...all in the same week these events occurred: I got married, bought a house, and found out my wife was pregnant. That week was seriously bonkers for me. I was also shot in the face back in November of '08. Pretty much unrelated to my marriage, home purchase or child, it's just something that I like to just throw out there because it is a fun fact about me haha.

Buuut anyway, Since everything is settling down for me now, I figured I can start making consistent posts. I had an idea, though...before I started just randomly posting...I figured that I would give myself a little bit of an introduction, so if you read my posts, you have a little bit of an idea of how my heart beats (musically speaking).

Music has always been a huge part of my life. I've been playing the bass guitar for twelve years now, which makes me feel old to say that. Playing musical instruments has been the best part of my life. No joke. I am lucky enough to have spent a decent amount of time in a touring band called That Hideous Strength (the band is currently on hiatus). With THS, I got to see and play with so many different awesome bands who played so many different styles of music, in so many different cities and states that I finally felt like my life was complete.

My musical taste is as broad as you can imagine...I hate assigning genres to music. My iTunes is so ridiculously full with music that it hurts. (This number is constantly increasing) At this momentI have 966 artists / 2443 albums....and I made a point to remove the genre from each album. My theory is...if it sounds good, and it invokes some sort of an emotion in me, then I like it no matter how the artist has it sound. My likes are so broad, it's gonna be easier to say what I don't prefer to listen to...I generally will not listen to modern country (songs like She Thinks My Tractor's Sexy) or modern gangser rap (Lil' Wayne, et cetera), but those essentially are the only two types of music that I do not listen to. However, I do love me some (in my opinion) good country (the legendary Johnny Cash, et cetera), and some (in my opinion) good hip-hop (Aesop Rock is my favorite rapper. I will write more about him in the future)...and past that, I will listen to just about anything. I cherish hardcore bands like Coalesce, yet I also go bananas over groups like Bright Eyes. I remember one time, a year or two ago, I was purchasing CD's...and I bought the album Colors by Between The Buried And Me, and the album The Shade Of Poison Trees by Dashboard Confessional at the same time. The cashier looked at me like I was making some sort of mistake, but I wasn't. I was super psyched to listen to both of those albums, regardless of the fact that they are on opposite ends of the musical spectrum.

Okay, I feel like this is taking far too long and I am saying too much. My point is, I enjoy it all. I will write about just about anything. If I hear something that I like, I will want to share it with you regardless if it is some unheard indie band, or some underground rapper, or a big name pop act. All I am asking, is for you to just be open minded when you check my stuff out. Sorry I just babbled on there for a long time.

Tony

PS- I love talking about music. All day every day. Feel free to drop me a line. (TonysDigitalDreams@gmail.com)

[MP3] Black Moth Super Rainbow - Twin Of Myself [The Go! Team Remix]

I'll admit it, I jumped onto the Black Moth Super Rainbow wagon really late. I'm just glad I made it. They're latest album Eating Us has been on repeat ever since I got it. On the other hand, I'm not too sure about this remix of "Twin of Myself" by The Go! Team. It takes away from the breezy dreamscapes and psychedelic of the original song. It just seems that they are just trying to make it more upbeat. Wish has potential, but no - that's not how its meant to be.

Take a listen and judge for yourself:

[StreamP3] Discovery - LP

In the past I've made it clear my appreciation for all things Discovery - the band. Although I do love the channel as well.

The anticipation for their new album is pretty high in my book. Their electronic afro blip music is not only catchy but it's different.

Maybe this will help ease your anxiousness - two more songs from the upcoming debut LP called...well...LP. You can listen to all 4 free songs down below via the bands website. You can also go to their website and sign up to the email list to stay up to date on all things Discovery.

LP will be released on July 7th via XL

Wye Oak have been on my listening que for a while. I was about to see them not long ago but yea....whole 'nother story. Listening to the new album, I'm kind of bummed I missed them. I'm sure they'll be back in Philly sooner than later.

Their debut LP, The Knot, will be released next month, 7/21/09 to be exact, via Merge Records. Luckily for you, the whole album is streaming right now

[VIDEO] Phoenix - 1901 [acoustic]

There have been so many videos and remixes of Phoenix songs over the past couples months that it's getting pretty ridiculous. Nothing undeserved though.

Here's a nice unplugged version of "1901" thanks to the french radio station Le Mouv':

[FREE MP3] BLK JKS - Molalatladi

A few weeks ago I mentioned my new love for Blk Jks [Black Jacks]- a kick ass afro-psych band actually from South Africa - who blew me away with their single "Lakeside." It's only been a few months since their debut EP was released and already I'm craving more. I won't have to wait long.

This fall they will be releasing their debut LP entitled After Robots. The newest track from aforementioned LP is a little diddy by the name of "Molalatladi" which kicks off the highly anticipated hype with a bang. A tight drum intro, freshly plucked guitar, horns and south african chants are just the beginning. Pretty soon the phenomenal guitar solo will come along and melt your mind.

After Robots will see release on 9/8/09 via Secretly Canadian

[MP3] Sleep Whale - Josh Likes Me

In the summer it's easy to get caught up in the wildness of the heat. Drinks are sweating in the burning sun, the BBQ is spitting hot lava and the rush of the season never seems to end [or wants to].

At the end of the day though, it's always nice to put on some nice comfy tunes and reflect on the good life. Last summer's chill mode album was given to me in the form of Bon Iver's For Emma, Forever Ago. This year, I may give it to Sleep Whale.

Sleep Whale is the freshest cut off of the Western Vinyl stock with their new EP, Little Brite. Little Brite starts off with little plucks and kicks of a subtle guitar which slowly builds with intricate surprises - water slushes, acoustic scratches, cellos and layered harmonies. The birds and crickets go well too. Oh wait those are coming from outside - they seem to fit flawlessly.

The first single to be released by Sleep Whale is the soothing "Josh Likes Me."

[Saturday In Videos] MGMT//Dinosaur Jr.//David Byrne//Davey Dance Blog

MGMT - Kids

I have three [3] theories as to WHY they made this video:

1) They really want to stay relevant with the indie crowd and not be lost in the mix
2) They just want to milk Oracular Spectacular for all it's worth. There's not much milk left. I drink soy
3) They're almost ready to release new shit. And they should be by now. For real

Honestly, I hope it's the latter. In that case, keep your eyes and ears ready. I know I will

[MP3] NEW Throw Me The Statue - Ancestors

Last summer I was practically obsessed with this band called Throw Me The Statue. Catchy songs like "Lolita" and "About To Walk" played on repeat in my head almost constantly. It just so happened that last summer I took a trip to Seattle [where TMTS are from] to hang with an old friend of mine. On the plane, I couldn't help but imagine everything that Scott Reitherman [frontman/creator of TMTS] was singing about.

This summer, I'm hoping that Throw Me The Statue's sophomore LP entitled Creaturesque delivers some top quality/much anticipated tracks. At least the cover looks refreshing. Nice pool.

Take a listen to a new song called "Ancestors" here:

If you've never heard of Throw Me The Statue before, they've been on a few commercials before for both Rhapsody and more recently, The Marriot, with the song "Lolita":

Creaturesque will see release on 8/4/09 via Secretly Canadian.

In the meantime, you should buy their first LP, Moonbeams, @ insound dot com. And you will. Because I say so

[Trailer] The Beatles: Rock Band

Here's the trailer for the new Beatles Rock Band game. Looks pretty fun. I'm not into gaming enough to buy it though. Game hits the stores later this year on September 9th.

[MP3] Passion Pit - The Reeling [Miike Snow Remix]

I never really post remixes on here. But this one deserves a little shout out:

Passion Pit's Manners has gone through a heavy remix load. Some are good, some are bad. Here's the latest I've heard from Miike Snow. Here they give The Reeling the treatment it deserves.

Manners is out now on Frenchkiss Records.

[Video] Micachu And The Shapes - Golden Phone

I just recently got into Micachu & The Shapes. At first listen I only liked a select few tracks off of her debut album Jewellery but it turns out that it just ones of those albums that takes a little bit to get used to. Here's a new video she and the gang [the shapes] did for the song "Golden Phone" - one of my favorite tracks.

It matches the song perfectly with its quirkiness/cuteness and its finger-snapping fun.

[MP3] Lightning Dust - I Knew

Members of Canadas Black Mountains are back at it again with the side projects. Not even a month ago we were given Stephen McBean's new album under his project Pink Mountaintops. This August, we look forward to Amber Webber and Joshua Wells' new album under their name Lightning Dust.

The first glimpse of the duos second LP, Infinite Light, is the song "I Knew." A highly danceable track with loads of heavy synth and "oo oo oo's" makes this song a staple for your summer dance mix.

[Video] Regina Spektor - Dance Anthem of The 80's

Definitely way better than the previous 2 songs I've heard from this album.

Regina's new album Far hits stores June 23rd. You can pre-order it now @ insound dot com.

[MP3] Tiny Vipers - Dreamer

Jesy Fortino aka Tiny Vipers will be releasing her 2nd LP entitled Life On Earth on July 7th via Sub Pop. The promo track, "Dreamer," begs for our attention with quiet guitar and subtle vocals about reflecting on past lives. The song structure is pretty basic but you can't deny the gorgeous power of her vocals - both lyrically and vocally.

For now though, be sure to grab this track and others on the Sub Pop Cybersex Digital Sampler.
