LAST POST OF 2009 + A NEW YEARS EVE PLAYLIST
This has been a great year for us @ Together In Digital Dreams. We've heard tons upon tons of amazing [for lack of a better word] music and met lots of beautiful people. If this year in music is any indication for what's ahead, then we're expecting a slew of wonderful releases in 2010. We're also looking forward to expanding the blog a little bit but that's even more news than I want to indulge you with, so keep them pants on; it ain't new years eve yet.
As a going away gift I put together a mini playlist [a "plist", if you will] of new years inspired tunes. These aren't necessarily "fun" "party" songs, rather songs to reflect on.
MP3 :: Man Man - Mysteries Of The Universe Unraveled
MP3 :: Harlem Shakes - Strictly Game
MP3 :: The Walkmen - In The New Year
MP3 :: Death Cab For Cutie - The New Year
MP3 :: Thursday - Jet Black New Year
MP3 :: Sundowner - One Hundred Resolutions
MP3 :: Yeasayer - 2080
In any case, I hope everyone has an amazing, beautiful and unforgettable New Years Eve.
See you in 2010!!

Check out Alan Wilkis' newest remix of the Cester French song "C'Mon (On My Own)." Wilkis spins this heavy piano-pop song into a new years eve friendly dance-off frenzy using ingredients like fresh violin, tasty synth and electric drums. Wilkis is growing a pretty large following and he deserves every bit of it. Follow him NOW on twitter (@AlanWilkis) and be sure to check his webspace.

REVIEW: Laura Veirs - July Flame
Laura Veirs: July Flame [Raven Marching Band Records]
I've heard that the winter of 2010 is supposed to be a brutal one and if the famous northeast blizzard of '09 is any indication, then we're all doomed. Luckily, Laura Veirs' 7th studio album July Flame will give the season a warm and cozy soundtrack.
Album opener, "I Can See Your Tracks" starts with a slow burn until it gives way to Veirs' soaring voice as she tells of conflicted love - "oh I can smell the smoke/from your fire, babe/but I'll leave you alone/and sleep in this lonely cave/and pray for a storm to scrub this dirt away". The title [and standout] track, "July Flame" is a catchy and burning ride through a haunting, yet beautiful, forest where the choir chants of "Can I call you my own?" repeat with purpose as they mash perfectly with the accompanying violin. The cello in "Where Are You Driving" breaks the silence of "Sun Is King" as we're taken deeper into Laura's mysterious world of screaming violins and soaring harmonies. "Little Deschutes" gives the warm acoustic a rest as we lend our ears to Veirs' dark piano ballad until the happy-go-lucky, horn enhanced, hand-clapping "Summer Is The Champion" brings us to bloom and gives us hope for a lush spring - "Summer is the champion/Let's get dizzy in the grass!". The 13-song album closes with the calming "Make Something Good" as she promises "it's gonna take a long, long time/but we're gonna make something so fine." - a solid quote to take with us as we head into 2010.
Top Picks:

MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM DIGI DREAMS [a playlist]
Hanukkah is over and my gifts have been unwrapped for more than a week. But I'll be honest, I do love me some christmas song covers. Maybe it's the redundant and ear-scratching sound of the retail world we live in that decided it was a good idea to play that chimpmunks song on repeat that lets me enjoy the interpretations and that warm feeling I get when listening to these songs.

Sometime a while ago, I heard a youtube version of Vampire Weekend's new hook, White Sky. I knew it was promising at least. But now that I hear this well recorded and fresh track, it's like opening a late chanukkah [early xmas] gift.
So far it's looks like Contra might be an album of ups and downs, but most certainly an album to purchase when it drops on Jan 12th.

Flight Of The Conchords may be over, but New Zealand's Brunettes are just getting started, again. John and Heather [brunettes?] will release their new record Paper Dolls on Feb 2nd via Lil Cheif Records.
Take a listen to "The Crime Machine" where Heather admits that she longs to live in the 1920s as the simplistic dream-pop takes her out for a ride.

MP3: HEKS ORKEST - How Will It All Fit
Heks Orkest [witch orchestra] is a reincarnation created from the ashes and limbs of old bands like Engine Down, Denali, Avail, Sparta, etc and it doesn't take too long to see where the influences and creative concepts come from.
How Will It All Fit is a fast paced, guitar ripping slam which clears all the dust off these old schoolers. At the same as picking out who plays what, it's hard to not notice that this project is offering something new for our ears to be filled with.

This is a performance from 11/18, and much to Evan's chagrin, I am going to post what I feel to be a stellar performance from a band who released one of the top 3 albums of the year (on my personal list). Please enjoy, and I highly recommend checking out their latest album "I And Love And You".

MP3: NEW EFTERKLANG SONG! - Modern Drift
Sometime last week, Efterklang announced the deets on their new LP entitled Magic Chairs. "Modern Drift" is the new song which introduces us to "a new Efterklang sound." A little more delicate and upbeat than the usual orchestrated bombardment of overwhelming but gorgeous sound. This is still Efterklang, but they have grown to incorporate a fresh vibe for 2010. Magic Chairs will be out Feb 22nd on their new home at 4AD.

Mos Def and Talib Kweli. Plus Amber and Haley from The Dirty Projectors...with The Roots as the backing band...it's like the perfect storm for an awesome performance. Just on a side note, if 2009 wasn't full to the brim with amazing albums, Mos Def's 'The Ecstatic' would have been very high on my top albums list. DIGI DREAMS' BEST ALBUMS OF 2009: PART ONE
The time has come for us to share our "best of" lists. It's been one hell of a year for some damn good music. So hard, that it's almost entirely impossible to make a cohesive list of the limited top picks.
I'm pretty sure you've seen some of the same albums if you read other music blogs. And the artists deserve the credit whole-heartedly for putting out amazing music. If you haven't heard of an album in the list[s], I highly suggest visiting some friends at your local record shop. If you don't have a local shop, hit up insound.com and support the cause.
We're not only basing our top 20 on how many times we've rotated an album, we're also basing it on how solid the entire album is from front to back - start to finish. If a record keeps our attention for more than 5 songs straight, chalk it up. [this list includes EP's]

Somewhere deep in southern Tenneseee [Chattanooga] lives Carl Cadwell - a dude who recently collaborated with some fellow musicians to bring you Summer Dregs and their new album From Gold To Green. MP3: NEW Beach House - Norway
It took me a little while to get into Beach House at first. It took the help of a friend making a little mix tape for me which included a few songs by them. I kept asking who it was and got the same surprising answer every time. It's been a few years since they dropped Devotion all over our asses. The hype for the next LP entitled Teen Dream is almost as overwhelming as G-bear which makes a lot of sense.
Check out the first official single "Norway" which is a little more sunny than the usual Beach House. It's like they finally drew the curtains open that kept them in the darkness for so long but still didn't want to wake up.

MP3: MOTORBIKES - Two Tempos
I came across this band named Motorbikes sometime last week while surfing my way around myspace and was instantly drawn in with their brand of chill indie jams. This Washington state duo consists of Paul and Nich who also run a little label for themselves called Fontee Fount where they released Motorbikes' first LP, New Color. The track "Two Tempos" is a slow building and infectious tune that you'll be caught humming for at least a couple days.

Wow is all I really need to say about Brookyln's next big thing. At first listen, I can already feel a deep rush from ears to my heart [as cheesy as that sounds...it's true]. Sunny indie jams and tales of breakup played with a passion that I haven't witnessed in a long time. They're currently getting ready to embark on a little tour from NY to Mass to DC to Philly to NJ. I highly suggest catching them on the rise as their debut LP drops bombs in December.

MP3: Crystal Antlers - It's All Over Now, Baby Blue [bob dylan cover]
Crystals Antlers turn themselves a little less spazz-blues-rock and a little more folk with a wonderful cover of Bobby Dylan's "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue." It's a nice change from the sluggish/drunk Dylan voice but I still don't think it holds up to the original. Yet again, do covers ever trample the masters?

SATURDAY IN VIDS: Ani Co // Monsters Of Folk // Rain Machine // Real Estate
Ani Co really "gets" their audience. Does the audience get them? I'm not really sure. Check out their new video for MWPP's opening track "In Flowers" directed by Avey Tare's sister.

MP3: Best Coast - This Is Real + When I'm With You
Best Coast [aka Bethany Cosentino] has been making some serious
Overall, the 7" is a well-produced lo-fi jam [if that makes any sense] of 2 of the years catchiest songs that should have been released in the summer.

MP3: Yeasayer - Ambling Alp [memory tapes remix]
Amid his busy schedule, New Jersey's bedroom pop solo dude Dayve Hawk aka Memory Tapes aka Memory Cassette aka Weird Tapes turned Yeasayer's newest upbeat/life changing/horn-enhanced single "Ambling Alp" into a dance floor friendly/happiest-bass-line-ever jam. You can find it on the Ambling Alp Single via Secretly Canadian along with a DJ/Rupture remix and an instrumental version.

MP3: Post Post - Wolf
In 2008, four junior's from Bryn Mawr college in PA came together to form a dreamy indie pop quartet called Post Post. These ladies recorded their debut EP called Meta Meta with two mics, apple's garageband application and passion for creating the music that they love.
Meta Meta is out now and is available for a one cent minimum on Awkwardcore. I suggest being a little generous and donating more. $5 gets you a physical copy...just saying

And also be SURE to catch them on November 27th with Free Energy and Tough Shits @ Kung Fu Necktie [tix].

MP3: BONELESS - Breathless + Warm Breeze
From Nevada comes chill, summer, bed-room jams from Isaac Knight. Isaac contacted me a while ago when he went by the name Destroy It. I was pretty impressed as the music separated itself from the usual suspects and massaged my brain with the smooth sounds. Check out a couple tracks from his upcoming demo/EP. Breathless is a super-soaked jam to help cool down any last heat wave of a forgotten summer while Warm Breeze is a friendly reminder of a season to look forward to. All are great examples of stream-of- conscious song writing.

MP3: Chandeliers - Mango Tree
This week hasn't been much of anything in the "new music" department.
Chicago's Chandeliers tear up the electro-percussion thing with Mango Tree from their 2008 LP called The Thrush [via Obey Your Brain]. Mango Tree is an accumulation of funk bounces, found sounds and unclassifiable style in the realm of Tyondai Braxton's classical mind trip.

A Good Lashing
Hello all. Keeping with the theme of music and my apparent lack of recent postings, I wanted to restart my blogging with a simple and funny video of a deleted clip from the new Spike Jonez/Kanye West short film, "We Once Were Once A Fairytale". With new recent dislike from Kanye and Non-Kanye Fans alike, I'm sure we will all find joy in this short clip. Enjoy!

VIDEOS: Port O'Brien "Robin's Blue" + "My Will Is Good" [Bodega Girls]
Check out Port O'Brien jamming out a stripped down unreleased song titled "Robin's Blue" for Shoot The Player outside of Sydney University.
Last month I posted a remix by Bodega Girls of Port O'Brien's "My Will Is Good". Not only did they take the song to a whole-nother-level, they made the video interesting yet nausea inducing - in a good way

MP3: We Are The Willows - A Funeral Dressed As A Birthday
Minnesota's We Are The Willows [aka Peter Michael Miller] evokes all the memories of childhood, friends and family while playing quietly at the dining room table [not really]. His upcoming debut LP A Collection of Sounds and Something Like the Plague [Amble Down Records - Nov 24th] will be out just on time for the winter season. I suggest you get it, grab a hot cocoa [or dark beer] and snuggle up with your best friends in a real pile - yea i went there.
