[review/mp3] - Black Gold

Listening to infectiously catchy indie-pop can never make for a dull day. Even after you turn it off, it'll still be on repeat in your head.

Today I received a copy of Black Gold's new album Rush [out now on Red Bull Records]. This Brooklyn duo of multi-talented musicians, Eric Ronick and Than Luu had made a little buzz around the end of last year. The new LP, Rush, opens with the track "Detroit" and introduces us to Black Gold with the heavy synths of Ronick and the pounding trash can drums of Luu. Most of the album, however, is much more than just the indie duo making some tracks. The two are accompanied with a never ending list of "incomparable musicians." - so they say in the linear notes. They take advantage of everything here from classic violin to congas to saw blades. The album as a whole is very warm and the textures very smooth. For the band, the stand out tracks are "Plans & Reveries", "What You Did" and "Breakdown", but honestly, my favorite track is probably "Shine" (#6). I can tell they take a lot of influence from Elton John with the strong use of grand piano and hopeful melodies. Another stand out track for me would be #8, "The Comedown." With Comedown, they simplify their pounding tempo of the previous 7 tracks with some sultry, sexy R&B grooves.

Overall, I think Rush is a good introduction to Black Gold. It shows that BG has the potential to grow into something more influential than just a catchy buzz band.

Keep a look out for Black Gold and be sure to pick up Rush.
